Privacy Policy

Night Embers is a private chat app for two people who have just matched, with a question game built into the chat. This policy explains what information we collect when you use the Night Embers app and this website (nightembers.com), what we do with it, and the choices you have.
Adults only
Night Embers is only for adults aged 18 and over. We ask for your date of birth when you create an account, and we do not create accounts for anyone under 18. If a sign-up is blocked for being under 18, no account is created. We keep a scrambled (hashed) form of the email address used and the date the block ends, so that the same address cannot be used to try again with a different birth date. If you believe someone under 18 is using Night Embers, email support@nightembers.com.
Information we collect
Information you give us
- Email address. You sign in with your email address and a one-time code that we email to you. There are no passwords.
- Profile details. Your display name, your username and your date of birth.
- Chat messages. The text messages you send to a connection.
- Game answers and choices. Your answers to questions, which question levels you are open to with each connection, and when you want the next question to arrive.
- Invites. The username or email address of anyone you invite. If you invite someone by email who does not have an account, we send that address an invitation email.
Information created when you use the app
- Your scores and streaks, and when you have read messages or viewed a reveal.
- Your device's time zone, so questions arrive at sensible local times.
- If you allow notifications: a notification token that identifies the app on your device, the type of device, the app version, and your notification settings.
- A short list of your recent notifications, so the app can show them to you.
- Basic technical information such as the app version, IP address, and the date and time of requests, which our servers log to keep the service running and secure.
- Sign-in security records. To limit abuse of sign-in codes we keep, for up to 30 days, a scrambled (hashed) form of the email address a code was requested for, together with the network (IP) address or device it was requested from.
The app does not ask for your location, contacts, photos, camera or microphone.
How we use your information
- To create your account and sign you in.
- To deliver your messages, questions, answers and reveals to you and your connection.
- To work out scores, streaks and what your answers have in common.
- To send emails you ask for or cause to be sent: sign-in codes and invitations.
- To send notifications to your phone, if you have allowed them.
- To prevent spam and abuse, enforce the 18+ rule, and keep the service secure.
We do not sell your information, and we do not use it for advertising. The app and this website contain no ads and no third-party tracking or analytics.
Who can see your content
- Your messages are visible to you and the one person you are connected with in that chat.
- Your answer to a question is hidden from your connection until you have both answered. After that, both of you can see both answers.
- Your level choices are private. Your connection only learns which levels you have both turned on.
- Your display name and username are shown to people who look you up by your exact username, people you invite, and your connections.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, we store a notification token for your device and use Google's Firebase Cloud Messaging to deliver them. Google receives that token and the notification itself.
Notifications never contain your messages, questions or answers. They say only that something happened, for example "New message" with the display name of one of your connections. A notification about a new invite does not say who sent it.
You can turn notifications off in the app's settings or in your phone's settings. The token is removed when you sign out or delete your account. We keep a short list of your recent notifications on our servers, for up to 30 days, so the app can show them.
How your information is stored
Your account, messages and answers are stored on our servers. They are sent between the app and our servers over an encrypted connection (HTTPS).
Night Embers is not end-to-end encrypted. This means your messages and answers are stored on our servers in a form that we are technically able to access. We access them only when needed to run the service, to fix a problem, to investigate a report of abuse, or when the law requires it.
No online service can promise perfect security. Please keep this in mind when deciding what to share, and remember that the person you are chatting with can always copy or photograph what you send them.
Service providers
We use a small number of companies to run Night Embers. They process information only on our behalf:
- A hosting provider, where our servers and database run.
- An email delivery provider, which sends sign-in codes and invitation emails.
- Google (Firebase Cloud Messaging), which delivers notifications to your phone if you have allowed them. Google receives your device's notification token and the notification, which never contains your messages, questions or answers.
- Google Play and the Apple App Store, which distribute the app and have their own privacy policies.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the safety of our users or the public.
How long we keep it
We keep your information for as long as you have an account. If you remove a connection, that chat and its questions and answers are deleted for both people. If you delete your account, we delete your profile, your answers, your invites, your connections (including the chats in them), your notification token, settings and history, and your sign-in security records. Where backups exist, copies in them are removed on a rolling basis as older backups are replaced.
Some records are removed sooner: recent notifications after 30 days, and sign-in security records within 30 days. A scrambled (hashed) email address blocked under the 18+ rule is kept until the block ends.
Your choices
- Delete your account at any time in the app under Profile & settings, or by emailing us. See Delete your account.
- Remove a connection from the menu in that chat. This deletes the chat for both of you.
- Ask for a copy of your information, or a correction, by emailing support@nightembers.com from the email address on your account.
Depending on where you live, you may have further rights over your personal information under local law. Email us and we will help.
This website
nightembers.com does not use cookies, analytics or advertising scripts, and loads nothing from other companies. Like most websites, our server logs basic request details such as IP address and time of visit.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page, and tell you in the app if the change is significant.
